InDesign Typography

InDesign users who want to improve their typography knowledge and skills have an important new resource to tap. InDesign Typography is a new lynda.com video series by graphic design educator and CreativePro author Nigel French.

Here’s the official description of the course:

Explore the numerous type options, type-related features, and type-specific preferences of Adobe InDesign. Using practical, real-world examples, instructor and designer Nigel French dissects the anatomy of a typeface and defines the vocabulary of typography.

The course moves from the micro to the macro level, addressing issues such as choosing page size, determining the size of margins, adjusting number columns, and achieving a clean look with baseline grids. This course takes you from laying out a page to delving into the hows and whys of typography.

While most of the videos are exclusive to lynda.com members, several samples are free for anyone to view, including the following:

How to balance ragged lines

Using Autoleading with inline graphics

How to set fractions

In addition to being a prolific author at lynda.com (20 titles and counting), Nigel also writes a regular column on typography called InType, for InDesign Magazine. As an added bonus, here’s not one, not two, but THREE InType articles you can download as PDFs.

Working With Grids

InDesign-Only Type Effects

Optical Alignment and Hanging Punctuation

By the way, InDesign Magazine is currently offering a HUGE discount on subscriptions: $42 for 2 years (use the promo code: pennies12).
