InDesign How-To: Use a Zero Width Space
In this InDesign “Three Minutes Max” video, Nigel French shows us what a zero width space is, and why you might want to use one. These invisible spaces break like a regular space and can alleviate unwanted hyphenation.

Your result with “CREATIVE PRO WEEK” looks great, but does that depend on the font and the actual letters? When I tried replicating these words in Proxima Nova Black, I got four characters on three lines and three characters on the third line. This seems a “your results may vary” situation … unless I missed a step. Thanks. — Nick.
Hey Nicholas,
This depends on the character count in the word you use. CREATIVEPROWEEK is 15 characters and so it divides evenly across 3 lines. Keep your character count in mind, the font you use shouldn’t matter.
You can also try what some of Nigel’s reference images from his pasteboard did, and add space to the beginning/end of one of the lines.
All the best,
Liam
Thanks for this. I’m in the other direction, though – I get lots of text from others where there are multiple zero-width spaces in the text that cannot be seen. How can I find/change them all out of the text?
