Happy Birthday (again) InDesign… math tip video

Happy birthday to InDesign... happy birthday to InDesign... you do the math.

[We had pulled this blog post a couple of weeks ago because Adobe took down the video from their site. Now it’s up again, as the 10th anniversary is in full swing in Adobe-land. So here it is again, for those who haven’t seen it!]

I know all the excitement these days revolves around Photoshop’s 20th anniversary, but InDesign is 10 now! To celebrate, the folks at Adobe are coming up with a short series of video tips and some other goodies to be announced.

A couple of months ago they asked me to come in and record some really quick tips. It looks like they finally released the first one. I’m a little embarassed because the whole thing was done unrehearsed in a conference room on a tiny Flip camera. But at least you get to see what the whiteboards at Adobe’s offices look like. ;)

The folks in the opening sequence are all Adobe engineers or managers, including Mr. Ninness, Mr. Kitchener (I think… so grainy it’s hard to tell), Mr. Vermurlen, and Mr. Eisley.

We’ll post links to the other videos when they’re released… stay tuned!

Here’s another video I did for Adobe’s Happy Birthday InDesign site:

Thanks everyone for the nice comments. Well, I’m sure if I had made the movie myself I would have picked music that reflects my personal aesthetics better.

(Personal story: I was once a disc jockey at my college radio station. The station “format” was “alternative,” which included punk, thrasher, or anything that would give you a headache or cause your parents to get indigestion. I decided to bring my own records in for my 6 am – 8 am slot, including Donovan, Simon & Garfunkle, and Jean-Michele Jarre… suffice it to say that I was somewhat of a “square” peg in a round hole. I didn’t start appreciating the depth and heart of reggae or Led Zep until many years later.)

As for the percentage thing, Bran: Yes, I left out all kinds of stuff. I was asked to keep it under 30 seconds or a minute! Whew…

  3. I’ve heard the tip a gazillion times…and it never gets old!!! Thanks David for all that you do to help us play with our toys better! Yes, ID is my main work toy, and I love it.

    David,

You have forgotten to mention that InDesign also does percentages !!!

Add +33.7% to a value and it will calculate the new value too !

    C. Posey, I was joking but it seems you didn’t get it.

  5. David – I think its great music… don’t listen to them.

Great tip David, but I have to agree with Branislav regarding the music choice!

    Guys,

When I listen to the music you have chosen, it is clear that you have smoked something not legal even on Mars.
