If you’ve ever said “print is dead”, check out the video below. You may never utter those words again. It shows the work of renowned designer Karim Rashid at the Heimtextil trade fair in Frankfurt earlier this month. Rashid designed the HP lounge area at the show and printed all his patterns on HP’s digital printers on a variety of materials. Everything in the lounge, from floor to ceiling, even the lampshades, was printed. It’s inspiring work, and it points to seemingly unlimited possibilites.
Can the day be far off when it’s mainstream practice to design your own curtains, sheets, wallpaper, etc, and simply bring your files to a store to be printed? Or maybe you upload them to a textile printing website, and save yourself the trip. Why settle for the colors and designs on the shelves of a store (or the pages of a catalog) when you can have whatever you can imagine (and create)?
