Ahhhh spring! Cue the sneezing and allergy eyes, but also the birds chirping, little critters curious to see what goodies you’ve planted for them in your garden, and spring cleaning. There’s nothing like opening the windows after a long winter and sprucing up the recently deep-cleaned house with a vase full of wildflowers. And like those springtime rituals, downloading totally free goodies to have at the ready for upcoming projects can also provide a breath of fresh air. Here’s a bouquet of fonts I picked just for you, with a few sprigs of icons and templates sprinkled in to class up the presentation.
Brownhill is a modern script typeface for all those inevitable wedding invitations you’ll be working on this spring. With a swift-marker-on-a-whiteboard look, the font includes ligatures and a generous set of underline swashes.
If you need a more serious typeface to grace your signage or announce a bold headline, check out Colus from Font Fabric. This display font contains a minimal standard Latin set, plus Cyrillic and is available in desktop, web, and app/e-publishing flavors.
If you need a sharp typeface to spruce up your design, Animosa is up to that particular challenge. A 5-weight family, the lowercase versions of this sans serif specimen are rounded and soft with the uppercase sporting a bold pointiness.
The font duo of Escucha Consuela offers two typefaces meant to work in harmony from brands to social media imagery to ads. The boldness of Escucha’s modern/retro forms contrasts nicely with the airiness of the Consuela script.
For those times you just want a typeface to scream from the top of your copy, consider Free Fat Font. It’s a chunky typeface that offers a regular and a slanted version. Period. As the info declares, “It’s free and it’s fat.” That’s all you really need to know.
Bringing it back down several notches, let’s look at Le Super Serif. A project a long time in the making, this uppercase only font comes in regular and semi-bold, and offers a whopping—and fun—set of 88 ligatures and alternate characters.
Presentations don’t have to be boring and presentation templates don’t have to be too “over-the-top-using-every-transition-available.” Somewhere in the happy middle is the Creative Presentation template from Pixelbuddha, which includes 90 slides, as well as some sample graphs and maps.
Made to carry the duotone look throughout, the Duotone PowerPoint/Keynote template sports nearly 20 slides, a slew of vector shapes and elements, and photo placeholders. There is a paid version that includes a duotone creator Photoshop action to easily match your photos to the template design.
I admit, I first thought this said “unicorn” set and I got way too excited at the thought. However, these UNICONS are pretty cool in their own way. The set of over 200 icons in simple line drawing style in categories such as office, social media, and shopping can easily be incorporated into print designs or pull duty as the next great app’s interface elements.
