Four "Legends of Photography" Headline The Sundance Photographic Workshop
Four internationally acclaimed photographers will serve as instructors at The Sundance Photographic Workshop, November 6-10, 2006 in Sundance, Utah. Joe McNally, Bob Krist, Moose Peterson and John Running will bring their specialized photographic expertise to Sundance, Utah’s cultural, recreational and artistic community and the original home of the Sundance Film Festival.
“The Sundance area is the ideal environment for hosting the workshops and inspiring our students,” said Hilary Platt Cole, general manager of The Sundance Photographic Workshop. “It’s both a magnificent wilderness setting and an extremely accessible location — just an hour from Salt Lake City, a major airport hub.”
Joe McNally leads a session at the workshop entitled “The Light and the Location.” Joe writes: “Light is the language of photography. It is how we speak as shooters, and it informs our pictures.” His course addresses fill flash, blending artificial and available light, portraiture, location assessment, client ad story management and effective pictorial story telling. A long-time photojournalist, Joe was the staff photographer for LIFE magazine and recently profiled by Apple.
Bob Krist will host a course titled: “Spirit of Place: The Essence of Travel Photography.” Bob will provide instruction on how to research a story, select a destination, prepare a shooting list, edit pictures and determine ways to share work with the larger community. A seasoned professional, Bob has been on assignment for National Geographic Traveler, Smithsonian, Islands and many other magazines. He has traveled to all seven continents, and has published hundreds of articles in which he shares his knowledge and experience. His travel photography column appears regularly in Outdoor Photographer magazine.
Moose Peterson is returning to teach another workshop on his specialty and passion — wildlife photography. His course, “The Digital Landscape,” will hone the eye and sharpen the pixels in order to capture the beauty within the image. One of the original shooters to use the Nikon D1 in 1999, Moose was the only wildlife photographer to shoot strictly digital in the technology’s early years. Moose is a Nikon Legend Behind the Lens, Lexar Elite Photographer, recipient of the John Muir Conservation Award and Research Associate with the Endangered Species Recovery Program. He also lectures across the country and is published in 130 magazines and 23 books.
John Running has been a portraiture professional for 33 years. He is also experienced in creating photography for advertising, design and editorial clients across the world. His style is has been called personally creative and graphically strong. Give him 1/125th of a second and he will give you so much more. His course, “Studio Portrait Workshop,” will address the most fundamental factor for successful portrait photography — the collaboration and interaction between photographer and subject. John will show students how to take control of the setting, light, composition and frame, and explore the influence and interdependence of each.
All four photographers will provide one-on-one instruction at The Sundance Photographic Workshop to help students better understand and exceed current skill levels. Class sizes are small by design in order to enhance personal attention and further expand individual abilities.
Students and teachers from previous sessions provide ample testimony to the value and experience of The Sundance Photographic Workshop:
“The resort is amazing. All of the facilities were definitely accommodating.”
“We really enjoyed the small, intimate group learning environment – the encouragement and support shown to each participant by the instructors.”
“The dynamic was amazing.”
“A busy vacation learning something new to take my mind off of busy work and family situations.”
“I hate the end of great workshops!”
