Flickr Friday: September 4, 2009
The so-called “Station Fire,” which began in Los Angeles County on August 26th, 2009, has burned about 144,000 acres and is still a roaring inferno as I write this.
There are plenty of pro photos of its devastation on traditional news sites, such as the Los Angeles Times. But for a different take on the event, I went to Flickr.
By limiting the Advanced Search date option, I quickly found the image below, uploaded by r1aviator on September 3, 2009. Entitled “Station Fire Sunset over Ridgecrest,” it was shot about 150 miles from LA. I was astonished to see the effect the smoke had on a landscape so far away — makes you understand how a large volcanic eruption brought about the “year without a summer” in 1816.
