Desert Island Reading

Last month, I received an email message from someone setting up a new graphic design department at a university. Her design library budget was limited, so she was looking for must-have book recommendations. While it was a hard question to answer because “must-have” depends on the goals of the program and the students, I told her five that I wouldn’t want to be without:
The Elements of Typographic Style by Robert Bringhurst.
Grid Systems by Josef Müller-Brockman.
How To Be a Graphic Designer Without Losing Your Soul by Adrian Shaughnessy.
Thinking with Type by Ellen Lupton.
The Universal Principles of Design by William Lidwell, Kritina Holden, and Jill Butler.
