Canto® Software announced today the release of Cumulus 7.5.1, a free download available to all customers on software maintenance agreements. Among refinements made to all editions of the Cumulus product line, Canto engineers have rolled new preview technologies into Cumulus 7.5.1, developed specifically for the company’s popular Web client software.
The first of the new technologies generates and stores preview images on the server’s hard disk. When a user requests a preview, the cached image is displayed – a process that takes far less time than generating on-demand previews. Preview size and quality are configurable, so when extreme detail is required, it’s available and displays quickly.
Canto’s second new Web preview technology enables Cumulus to display high-resolution thumbnails in place of standard previews. This means assets stored in nonimage formats, such as PowerPoint, QuarkXPress, InDesign and others, can now be previewed from any Web browser, even when the creating application isn’t available.
Extending the benefit further, users can specifically determine what is displayed as a preview for each asset, which is important when a cropped close-up or other image segment provides a more meaningful preview than the entire asset. Both options significantly reduce workload on high-traffic servers, enabling companies to serve more users without investments in additional server hardware.
“Generating on-demand previews isn’t necessary in most situations,” explains Canto CEO Ulrich Knocke. “Most assets stay the same from moment to moment, and in the case of an archive, they remain so forever. These new technologies enable users to see previews that can be even more useful than before, and it all happens within a second or two.”
The software’s original preview technology, which generates a new “live” preview for each user request, remains available. Cumulus systems that are used to manage in-progress assets will likely continue to use this option, because it ensures previews accurately reflect the current state of evolving assets.

The Cumulus 7.5.1 upgrade is available now, free of charge, to Cumulus Workgroup, BrandAssistant and Cumulus Enterprise customers on Software Maintenance (SM) subscriptions.
