I have an account with Creative Pro Magazine, but the link for downloading Issue #12 has not been working for me.

Kudos to Keith Gilbert for his excellent article in Issue 12 on making books. Yet from my experience, designers working alone are better off working in a single InDesign file. The Book feature, despite the advantages Keith describes, tends to mostly complicate long document construction. I mention this because over the years I’ve run into novice designers who assumed the Book feature was to be used when designing books. Some even made each chapter a separate ID document (guilty as charged) in the Book panel. Not that this strategy is wrong, it’s just unnecessary and over-complicates the production process. Perhaps if Adobe got serious and updated the Books feature I might feel otherwise. But until that happens (and regardless of the pub’s length), stick with one .indd file per book.
