Cool, Classic Fonts Debut on Fonts.com to Benefit the Monotype Foundation

Cool and classic describe the first font pack available to benefit the Monotype Foundation, a nonprofit organization that supports education, research and achievement within the worldwide typographic community. The Cool Classic Value Pack can be viewed and purchased at www.fonts.com and navigating to Font Packs/Value Packs.
“This collection is great for two reasons,” said Allan Haley of the Monotype Foundation board of directors. “First, the package offers a cross section of versatile roman and script typefaces that can be used across a wide spectrum of applications. Second, all proceeds from the sales will be donated to the Monotype Foundation to help fund scholarships for students studying typography and typeface design. The Cool Classic Value Pack is truly an investment in the future of quality typeface design, which is the coolest, classiest thing of all.”
Five fonts comprise the package: the Albertus® design, conceived in the 1930s and based on letters drawn for a bronze inscription by Berthold Wolpe; the digital revival of the Gill Faciaâ„¢ font and its companion italic by Colin Banks, based on Eric Gill’s original inspired by signage he drew in the 1930s for the British bookseller and stationer, WH Smith; the Mahogany Scriptâ„¢ typeface with its lavish capitals and flowing lowercase alphabet; and the Pepita® design, an informal script with slight irregularities in weight and character shape, drawn by the Hungarian designer Imre Reiner in the 1950s. “These typefaces combine nicely with a broad range of serif and sans serif styles, yet each face is a commanding communicator in its own right and will add value to virtually any font collection,” said Haley.
The Cool Classic Value Pack is available for $99 in either the TrueType® or PostScript® format for Microsoft Windows® systems or in the PostScript format for Macintosh® platforms. The cross-platform OpenType® version of the value pack is $129.
The U.K.-based Monotype Foundation was formed in 2004 to support educational and research opportunities within the worldwide typographic community. The establishment of two student scholarships is under way, with funding being sourced from Monotype Imaging Inc. and private donations through the sale of limited edition prints.
Reproductions of Eric Gill’s original drawing of the Gill Sans® Bold Extra Condensed typeface original type drawings are available for a minimum donation of 100 pounds (approximately $200) through www.monotypefoundation.org. Gill designed the typeface in 1937 for The Monotype Corporation Ltd. near London. The reproduction features the alphabet in both uppercase and lowercase letters along with numerals and punctuation marks. Gill’s corrections and pencil titling and initials are visible, just as in the original drawing, which is stored in Monotype Imaging’s archives at the company’s U.K. office near London. The 500 18 x 24-inch reproductions are printed on archival quality matte paper using the giclée digital fine art printing process.
Each limited edition is accompanied by a commentary by Michael Harvey, the British type designer, educator and author who began his career as a letter carver after reading Gill’s autobiography. Also included is an article about Gill by Sebastian Carter, the British designer, fine printer and writer on typography. The Gill article first appeared in a 1990 edition of the “Monotype Recorder,” a journal published by Monotype through much of the twentieth century.
This spring, the Monotype Foundation will issue its second limited edition reproduction, based on original type drawings of the Centaur® typeface by Bruce Rogers. Those interested in contributing to the Monotype Foundation and obtaining the Centaur print may receive information on first availability after signing up for e-mail updates at www.monotypefoundation.org.
