Chris Orwig Teaches You Portrait Photography

The online trainer lynda.com has launched a new series, “Narrative Portraiture,” taught by photographer Chris Orwig. At the end of the course, you should be able to use location, natural light, and other elements to create photographs that don’t just capture likenesses, but that tell stories about their subjects.
The first installment is called Narrative Portraiture: Foundations of Portraiture. In it, Chris introduces portraiture concepts, and explains how to connect with the person you’re photographing and identify the details that will tell his or her story. Chris covers location, lighting, and composition, and also talks about the lenses and cameras you might want to use for given situations.
In the second installment, Narrative Portraiture: On Location in New York City, Chris takes you to a photo shoot on the Brooklyn Bridge. He explains how to use architecture, available light, and even people who walk by to help tell the story of the person you’re shooting. He’ll also give you tips on prepping for location shots, from choosing camera gear to storyboarding. At the end of installment two, Chris gives you assignments so you can take what you’ve seen and incorporate it into your own work.

To watch these and other lynda.com courses, you must subscribe. There are four subscription tiers, which begin at $25 per month.
