When InDesign CS5 shipped, one of the most common complaints we heard was “where are all those free templates that used to come with the program?” Adobe had discarded them from InDesign and the Creative Suite. Perhaps they were hard to update? Perhaps it was some economic or logistical decision? We really don’t know.
But we’re happy to announce that after a year of discussing, wrangling, debating, and more email exchanges than we care to think about, we have received permission from Adobe to make these available to you, our InDesignSecrets readers.
You can find the InDesign templates here.
Of course, we can argue over the quality or aesthetics of the templates. After all, some are sort of strangely built, or don’t make use of styles or other InDesign features as well as we’d hope. But we see templates as just a “starting point,” ready for you to make better. And we do believe that a number of these will be very helpful for any InDesign user, especially beginners who need to get up and running quickly.

For some reason when I try to open the templates (I am using Indesign CS5) I get an error message stating “Adobe Indesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing, or the file may be open in another application.” Help!

By the way, all the files use OpenType fonts that should be on your system (they’re part of the set that’s installed automatically with InDesign).
All images are embedded in the files so you don’t have to worry about keeping track of original linked images. If you want to edit the embedded images, select one (or more) in the Links panel and choose Unembed Link from the Links panel menu.
I’ve found that a number of the templates make intelligent use of master pages and layers, especially; and just about all of them use paragraph styles and character styles.
If you still have a copy of CS4 on your computer you can still access these templates by choosing “New from template..” Bridge will open up and show you the location. But this is a great initiative! Thnx!
Congratulations for the initiative. Thanks to this, much more people will take their first steps in InDesign the same way I did, back in the days of version 1.5, digging through the templates that used to be bundled with the software.
