Adobe Removes Older Versions of Apps from Creative Cloud

In a move that took users by surprise, Adobe has removed most older versions of Creative Cloud applications from the CC desktop app. An announcement titled “Changes to Creative Cloud Download Availability” was posted on the Adobe Blog on Wednesday. It states that “Creative Cloud customers will only have direct download access (from the Creative Cloud Desktop app and Adobe.com) to the two most recent major versions of Creative Cloud desktop applications.” With the one exception being Adobe Acrobat, for which only the most recent version is available for download.

And indeed, you can see the change reflected now if you try to install an older version of InDesign from the CC desktop app. Only versions 14 and 13 are now available.

If you put on your version number decoder ring, that translates to CC 2019 and CC 2018.

What About CS6?

CS6 apps are no longer available through a Creative Cloud membership. But at this point, it does not appear that they are being automatically deleted from users machines. For example, CS6 still launches on my computer (but it seems a bit nervous).

If you bought CS6 and have a serial number, you can keep using it. Adobe is not removing software purchased with perpetual licenses. If you need to download a copy of older software purchased directly from Adobe, you can do that here (have your Adobe ID handy).

If you have more questions, Adobe encourages you to head to the Contact Us page, and click on the Chat bot on the bottom right hand corner, click on Downloading or Installing, then type Agent.

While the vast majority of CC subscribers do use the most recent versions of the apps, there are undoubtedly some folks who will be impacted. In a poll we conducted last year, about two-thirds of respondents were on the most recent version.

Stay tuned. We’ll update this post with more details as they become available.
