A Postcard from Silicon Valley
Dear kids,
Your father and I are having a wonderful vacation in California. Last week we were in L.A. We visited my sister in Santa Monica and got to see Universal Studios and Venice Beach. But nothing was as exciting as when we went up north to San Jose to AdobeLand. I didn’t know what to expect, but it was definitely the high-point of our vacation.
We started our day in the huge PostScript theater where we saw the 3-D movie that dramatizes the font battles between the Type 1 and True Type fonts. At the end, the Open Types came in and called a truce, asking everyone to get behind the new standard.
We then made our way over to WebLand where we could choose between the LiveMotion and GoLive shows — which were live, not taped. WebLand also had a small show of Acrobats; but we skipped that and went to the much bigger Acrobat show in BusinessLand. Your father said they were much more fun than the Acrobats he saw several years ago in PrePressLand.
We spent most of our day in GraphicsLand, which is older (but much bigger) than WebLand. There was the huge IllustratorCoaster where you could ride the Bezier curves. (Your father went without me; you know how I don’t like throw-up rides.) Then we went on the boat ride, where we got to drop anchor points all over the lagoon.
We also went to InLand where we saw the little world of InDesign, InCopy, InScope, and InProduction. They have all these little people living in little houses, taking up just the littlest bit of space. It seemed a little too little for my tastes, but the attendants promise that someday InLand will be much, much bigger.
Your father said he didn’t mind how small InLand was compared to that huge QuarkWorld Xpress train he rode several years ago in Denver. Although it was the biggest ride of its kind and went everywhere he wanted to go, he never got over how arrogant the conductor and ticket takers were. He also said there weren’t any other things to do in QuarkLand, as they had closed all their other exhibits. How sad.
Back at AdobeLand, I spent loads of time shopping at the Photoshop centre. (You’re not supposed to say “I went Photoshopping” but of course everyone does.) They had just added a whole new section of vector toys that have much cleaner edges than those fuzzy, stuffed pixel pets. I’ve brought you each a lovely assortment of both vectors and pixels to play with.
Unfortunately, we were too tired to go to the movie Premiere they show each evening. Perhaps we’ll go next year, when we take you two with us.
Tomorrow we’re on our way up to San Francisco to MacromediaWorld. The brochure makes it look like a lot of fun. Your father says they have a huge Web that people can climb up. He also says I’ll enjoy watching the Dreamweavers create their special designs. We want to go see the cartoons and moving pictures in FlashWorld. And we’ve been told we must not miss the Fireworks each evening.
As you may remember, we were supposed to continue on up to Seattle to MicrosoftWorld. But a nice couple we met at AdobeLand told us not to bother. Very little fun stuff, mostly just business rides.
Hugs and kisses to you both and we’ll see you soon.
Love,
Mom
