    I have a folder of around 70 Word documents (chapters in a book). I need to place them into an InDesign file, but I want each doc to stay a separate story. So far the only scripts I’ve found merge them into one story. And placing them by hand is… tedious. Anyone have any ideas?

    That’s exactly what I need. Do you know of one? Sadly, I don’t know enough to write it myself.

    Gilly: Is this something you need to do regularly (like every week or every month)? If it is just for a one-time project, it is probably faster and easier to just place the 70 stories manually… it would only take an hour or so, right? Choose File > Place, then grab 10 or 15 of them in (click on one, then shift-click on the last), then click OK and they’ll all be loaded into the place cursor. Then you can click to place, or Shift-click to place-and-flow (if the story is longer than a page).

    If you have to do this same thing often, though, then a script might be a good solution. (Unless there is a free or cheap script you can find. I don’t know of one.)

    Another option would be to use this script:

    and then apply a paragraph style to the %%% it inserts. The paragraph style could force the text to start on a new page… and then you could use the StorySplitter script to break the threading there:

    (you would have to run the story script 70 times though, I think)

      It’s something I do about once a month. I did try using the place documents script with story splitter, but yeah, having to go through and split every story ended up being about as much work as loading them separately. Oh well, I was hoping I was missing some easy solution, but I guess not. Thanks anyway!

    Gilly, I tried Davids tip with Peters script and this is great. Also I wasn’t aware of the StorySplitter-Script (note: NOT SplitStory.jsx). Of course what is missing in this script: Split before a special paraStyle or Split before a special GREP.

    However: I made those %%% green and 50 points and insert a break character to odd pages. This way it is easily to identify the breaks. So this way is surely much faster than place everything by hand.

    [Warning: the script checks the para style to verify if the paras begin on a new page!]

    It’s very simple as you see: Just select the para style target [“here, Chapter”] and OK! That’s all!
