    When I span columns it leaves a space on the first line of the second column. How do I get rid of this?

    D you have a hard return that has ended up at the top of the column?
    Turn on the invisibles and see what shows. This will probably tell you the reason.

    lock to baseline grid and it’s off just a little bit?

    Do the paragraphs in the two columns have different paragraph or character styles applied?
    If so does one they have Align to Grid applied?
    Does one of the columns have different leading applied? Even to one letter in the first line or more probably the return character at the end end of the line.
    Any of these could affect the alignment.
