Problem when merging multiple documents

I’ve been working on revisions to a big book. To keep it easier to handle, I split the book into chapters. I made sure that each chapter starts on a right-hand page and ends on a left-hand page.

I merged them using the “move pages” feature and all went pretty smooth, till the last chapter.

Instead of the last page of the next to last chapter and the first page of the last chapter becoming a spread, they look like 2 documents stacked on top of each other. See screen shot here:

I’ve tried clicking and dragging the pages together, but that does not work.

I also noticed that blank pages that I had in the files would disappear. I had to go back and put some invisible text on the blank pages, or they would not be there after merging.

      Any solutions?

Why don’t you use the Book feature in InDesign? It will save you all the trouble.

Ari–Not sure about the OP’s situation but the book publishers my company deals with wants one document–no book feature.

Try clicking on the second chapter opener and uncheck the section start.

You simply need to use the Book feature to do this. Its by far the easiest way to control lang documents. The book feature can handle chapters, and make sure, that they always start on a left hand page. Use it!

I’m updating a book. It came to me as one InDesign file, no book features. I broke it into sections so that when adding pages, it would not effect chapters that follow.

I don’t know if the printer would have a problem with it in book format. Besides that, final edits have been made with it put back together.

I have not heard back from the client since the last edits. He may have sent the pdf to the printer, in which case there’s no need for any fixing. If I need to, I’ll try Dwayne’s suggestion.

      Thanks.

I know lot of folks use and like the book feature in Indesign. I also think it’s a great feature, as I hate having one huge document.

But many of the big publishers don’t want us to use the book feature. They want and insist on a single large document (all text threaded).

This makes it a royal pain in the butt when they outsource to someone else and only chapters are threaded (so we have to rethread the entire document). Or when we are given 20 files and have to make them into one.

      And they insist ONE document.

Even worse is when they buy the rights to a book (either done in Spain, UK, Australia, or somewhere) and there are no style sheets written or master pages (i.e., all running heads done by hand). We have to recreate the files and write the style sheets and make master pages. And make one document.

And all this has to be done in two days.

      Sorry for ranting.
