      Hi there,

If I have a technical document with pages that needs to be numbered 1.0, 1.1, 1,2, 2,0, 2.1, 3.0 etc, how can I automate this? For the life of me I cant think how to do it.

I have tried fiddling with the section and running header options and can do it with section markers – but if they add in a new section later the old ones dont update. You can’t do it with section prefixes as you can’t add a zero. I feel like there’s a simple way that is eluding me, anyone got any ideas?

      Thanks

Put each section in a separate document, then add all documents to an InDesign book. Use the Chapter variable for the section numbers.

But the challenge is the first page number: InDesign can’t start numbering at 0, it has to be at least 1. You could start numbering at 1 and do the page number in a character style so that a script can later find it and replace the auto page number with a static value (minus 1). Though that’s a problem if you use cross-references.
