      Hi

      I’ve just joined and downloaded one of the templates you have on your site. Is there a quick way to alter the default language from English US across all of them. I imported the character and paragraph styles into a document so my page sizes are right (A4) but the language of the styles is still US

      Thanks

      No, sorry, InDesign has no easy way to change the language (or any other format setting) across lots of paragraph and character styles at the same time.

      Thanks for the reply David. I hoped, like the current version of Word, to access some nice paragraph layouts by people who have more of an eye for style than I do, and save time in the process. Looks like I’ll still have to do the yards, unless you have any other suggestions of where to look. (I used the book template – ok, I guess.

      Here’s a scriptlet to change the language in all paragraph styles:

      styles = app.activeDocument.allParagraphStyles;
      for (i = 1; i < styles.length; i++) {
        styles[i].appliedLanguage = 'English: UK';
      }

      To do character styles as well, change allParagraphStyles to allCharacterStyles.

      There’s not an automatic way, but there’s a faster way.

      Just do a GREP Find/Change. In the Find What field enter .+, leave the Change To field empty. In the Change Format field, under Advanced Character Formats select any language that you want.

      Make sure that the scope of the search is document-wide, includes footnotes, master pages, hidden etc. Then just hit Change All.

      Now to define it in the style, just go to any paragraph and redefine the style. It’s arguably faster then editing every style and changing the language.
