I created a document using the US Newsprint (Snap 2007) CMYK color profile. Within that doc. I created a 75% grey swatch that looked as it was supposed to look. I then created a new document using the same color profile and copied and pasted all of the elements from the first document to the second one. The 75% grey suddenly appeared brownish. Although, when I exported the PDF and opened it in Acrobat, the color looked grey again. Why does the color look different only in InDesign, not in Acrobat, when I changed nothing. I also created the new doc again with a new 75% grey swatch (as opposed to copying all of the elements and pasting in the new doc.) and still the same issue arises. Any insights? Thanks in advance!

When you made the second document, did you set it to the newsprint profile? How did you assign the profile for document 1 and 2? When you made the PDF, did you use one of the PDF/X presets?

I discuss these topics in detail in my new title at Lynda.com called InDesign Insider Training: Color Management.

Thanks, David. I am in the middle of your Lynda.com tutorial right now – which prompted me to reach out to you about my issue.

I opened ID, clicked create new document, the document preset was set to Default, Intent was set to print. I then clicked color settings and switched from FOGRA to Newsprint. Then I created the new document and the color setting was already set to Newsprint when I checked the color setting. I didn’t use convert to profile or assign profile. As I am writing, I think I am figuring it out – for the first doc., I would need to use the Convert option to apply the Newsprint profile, since it was set to FOGRA at first. And that is why my new doc contains the newsprint profile – because I changed the color setting which only changes new docs, not the current one. Right?

So the brown I am seeing is how the 75% grey would look on newsprint?

Oh good; I’m glad you know about that tutorial.
Yes, the Color Settings only changes the setting for new docs, so it sounds like it did not change the first document. And yes, a gray swatch does tend to look brown on newsprint. You’re on the right track!

Oh, one more thing: You want to be super careful about using Convert to Profile in InDesign. You probably meant Assign Profile. I explain the difference in that video tutorial.
