Pasting .txt lists into Indesign pages

My work involves producing unique artwork of a single design. Basically one design with hundreds of variations for each page. My method is very poor, but it works. I’m looking to streamline the process.

Basically I set a master for the design, and then I manually paste-in-place a blank text box on each page (right clicking each page and pasting while max zoomed out, on each page!). For those wondering, this text is related to the design. I love Cats for example.

I then ‘Cut’ from my .txt list and paste into the relevant text box on each page. Again this works, but seems like a huge time vampire. I am pasting each line from my txt list which may be in the hundreds/thousands.

Surely there is a way to grab my .txt lists (my lists are generally single words, maybe two) and PASTE this list and all text boxes would be filled? Ideally the text would scale to the text box’ size (but this is not an issue as I don’t mind manually reducing text size for longer words).

      So the questions are:

      1. How do I get a blank, EDITABLE text box on each page without me manually placing them? Setting a text box in the master makes it uneditable – I have to shift click to make it editable; almost as annoying as manually doing them.

      2. I have single word .txt lists which are broken after each line. Can I paste this list into somehow-threaded text boxes (if I can crack Question 1.)

      3. Can the text boxes auto-scale the text size to fit the frame? Would be super handy, but I don’t mind picking out the longer words to manually resize.

If possible, this will save me hours of artworking.

Self breakthrough report! But still not there.

What I have figured out is. I have ditched the text box in favour of a set margin (the margin box is basically the text box now)

I have now PLACED my text file in this space (the hover over icon for the Place, had Brackets ( ) ) and then the text Auto-Flowed.

This is GREAT and does exactly what I want for the text lines which FIT the margins. Longer words which go over, obviously go onto multiple pages. When I resize the text all of the text changes which is a bit of a problem.

The text flow creates the pages for me which is amazing. If I can crack getting the longer words to fit, the world is mine. Or I may sacrifice the design for a more condensed font?

Is auto resize a thing for pasted, auto-flowed text.

edit: There are no text boxes, just to confirm.

ID does not have a feature that sizes text to frames, but there is a feature in the Text Frame Options dialog box that lets you size frames to the text.

I strongly recommend learning a bit more about how text flows into InDesign master page text frames. It doesn’t have to go margin to margin. You can place a frame on a master page and then use File > Place to put the text into it and have it flow automatically.

Search the site here for placing text or flowing text. There are a lot of videos about this at lynda.com also (including my own Essential Training title).
