I am working on a document that has a recurrent footer that appears on both pages in a spread in InDesign CS6. However, when I export the file to PDF, that footer disappears on many left-hand pages. I have tried exporting the file in multiple PDF formats but nothing solves the problem. My Adobe PDF Preset is a modified High Quality Print (the modification is to show the crop and bleed marks). I have Standard set on None; Compatibility is set on Acrobat 5 (PDF 1.4). On the cover page, when viewing the PDF in Acrobat XI, I get the message “An error exists on this page. Acrobat may not display the page correctly. Please contact the person who created the PDF document to correct the problem”…but I’m not told what the problem is!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That is strange. My first suggestion would be to clean out the editing cruft in the document by exporting to IDML and creating a pristine copy by opening that in InDesign and saving it. The internal database that is an InDesign document accumulates various artifacts in the course of editing the document, and occasionally these start to cause problems (they always create bloat, and you’ll be surprised sometimes how much an INDD will shrink when it’s given the IDML “purge”). Let us know if that doesn’t fix the problem, and we can go from there.

BTW: If you’re sending to a print provider, the better output format to use is PDF/X-1a, which is a universally supported press standard.

You may also want to try detaching the page number from the master page. I have had InDesign do weird things with master page items from time to time… Maybe some of the tricks I tried here will work for you: https://documentgeek.blogspot.com/2012/05/what-to-do-when-indesign-variables-dont.html
