Fixed Layout EPUB Limitations?

I am creating a fixed layout EPUB containing lots of photography, some video, moderate amounts of animation, multiple fonts, color and formatting. This is created on a Mac with the Creative Cloud Suite. Are there limitations with respect to using of all the wonderful attributes available in InDesign Fixed Layout EPUB that are going to prohibit this EPUB from Validating? Which “EPUB check” methods of validation should I apply to pass the test? Keeping in mind this EPUB file is super-sized compared to a reflow-able, cover only image, EPUB. Research used to create this EPUB are from studying Anne-Marie Concepcion’s videos on Lynda.com. What is the firs/best Validation Program I should download to begin the process of “warnings and errors”?

The silence on all your points is deafening, it seems that fixed layout epubs export is beta at best, very limited when it comes to working on all platforms, and so far only seems to have no problems in ibook. As for validation I would be amazed if anyone has validated any output (fxl) from Indesign, so far.
I am sure they will get it to work but it hasn’t happened yet. I want it to work so much.

      Hey Tim,
I am very new to fixed layouts EPUB, in fact I just upgraded to CC InDesign from CS 5.5, mainly because of a tutorial by Pariah Burke I am currently working through. I pretty much have finished an 8×10 landscape orientation book of my photography for printing and was hoping to use the same format for an EPUB. Enter reality it seems. While I still have all the text and photography it seems like the text needs to be 30pt to work on a 7″ tablet, let alone an IPhone.

Now I read from your response to Linda that there have not been ANY books published in the fixed layout EPUB format. Did I misread your comments?

There have been books published in fxl (see Yellow Submarine on itunes) but I am not clear on what has been done only from Indesign CC.

I want to be given examples to prove me wrong.

I will continue to create fixed layouts too, it’s a great format. Do remember you are designing for digital devices when it comes to type size though.

Thanks to both Tim and berruiser for your input to my post. I did finish the fixed layout ebook and am in the process of testing the functionality on iPad and Kindle. The iPad version works great having no issues with the exception of the file size and the download time. Once loaded on the iPad it works very well. The Kindle is still out for trial. The adventure continues.

      Hi Linda
Thanks for the update, I have made ebooks with animations and sound files that work great on ipad, Mac and in Readium, however outside those they have had problems, with fonts and sound.
Keep us updated on how it goes for KIndle. Good luck with the adventure. :)

Does anyone know if fixed layout epub works on Android devices?

ADE is available on Android. Kobo support is supposed to be good. And Gitden Reader looks interesting.

epubtest.org has an ePub 3 support matrix, but coverage is spotty and it looks like they need more contributors to keep the information current.
