InDesign, Proportional Lining, and PageFlex?

      Hi all,

This one’s a bit of a shot in the dark, but I hope someone here has experience working with InDesign files that have a destination of being loaded to PageFlex. For those not familiar with it [I am only recently familiar], as I understand it, PageFlex allows printing companies to create templates in InDesign that are then made available in an online ordering system to clients, so they upload photos and type in text, which are all automatically placed and formatted for print fulfillment. It’s a pretty convenient setup when you want to give print ordering autonomy to people who are not design- or software-savvy (such as real estate agents ordering brochures and mailers, as is the case here).

The issue I’m having is with forcing proportional lining on numerals used in the text fields. In InDesign, I have the text set up to do this correctly, but apparently there is not such an option when the template design is translated to PageFlex. So I guess my question is, is there any way to force proportional lining of an OpenType font, independent of the software? It seems like InDesign, when numbers are entered while the caps lock key is on, automatically default to lining instead of oldstyle. Trying this does not seem to make a difference when producing a proof through the online system, and I wasn’t sure if there was a way to completely remove the oldstyle information from the font file or otherwise force the use of lining instead of oldstyle?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I am going to be of no help here, just a sympathetic ear. I work at a print shop and used PageFlex years ago; the font issues are truly a pain. It’s the weekend, but I’ll ask my co-worker on Monday if he has any ideas.

I have no familiarity with PageFlex, but have you tried setting the options specifically in the Paragraph Style? On the OpenType Features pane, there is a dropdown for Figure Style. It defaults to, well, “Default Figure Style.” If PageFlex interprets the default as Proportional Oldstyle, then it may be overriding what was typed in the template. Defaults can create various kinds of havoc if they are defined one way on System A, then the document is opened on System B that has a different default.

It’s always safer to define things explicitly whenever possible (like creating a style called “Body Copy” for text, even if it’s exactly the same as InDesign’s “[Default Paragraph Style]”).

Thanks for your help, everyone. Colleen, thank you for checking into this further. I checked with the printer that uses PageFlex, and their graphics team is unaware of any functionality to specify proportional lining in PageFlex. Seems illogical since if it can interpret OpenType fonts, one would think the developers would plan for that functionality. Not sure of the legality of this idea, but since I have to send them the font file in the first place, I wonder if there is a utility to strip the other numbering styles from the font file, leaving only the one option?
