      hello. I often have clients who change the names of pdfs I send them. Is there a way of embedding an Indesign file name in to the pdf document properties, so that even if somebody changes the name of the pdf I can still discover the original indesign file name. Im on a mac, using CS6. thank you.

      Sure. Once you make the PDF, go into properties and in the “Title” section, add the information you want. Even if the PDF itself is renamed, the title box info will be the same.

      thanks Dwayne. Is there any way of automatically doing this when making the pdf?

        With your InDesign file open, go to “file” and scroll down to “File Info” then click the “Description” tab.

        You’ll get the dialogue box where you can put in the title. When you export that file to PDF, that title name will be there.

      Hi David,

      I don’t think you can reach that in a normal use of InDesign (i.e. on manual PDF exports). However, you can do that with a script :

      https://ozalto.com/debug/originalName.jsx.zip

      That will add a custom xmp metadata to the output PDF file which value will be the original name. The script is basic but if you want more changes feel free to come back to us at ozalto.com

        I’m not sure what you mean, loicaigon. What I said does work in the normal use of InDesign and manually exporting a PDF.

        I will check out your script, though. Thanks.

      @Dwayne,

      Our messages crossed each other. When I saw David’s post, there wasn’t yet your answer and when I posted, the screen refreshed and I saw your comment.
      I wasn’t sure that the metadata would survive to the PDF export that’s why I thought of a script ;). It’s good it does simply as you introduced.

      Best,

      Loic

      No big deal, Loic :)

      I did a simple test, and the metadata did go through.

      I’ll check out your script. I’m amazed at you guys who can write scripts. I can’t do ’em.

      I had no problem writing Word macros, but scripts just boggle me.
