Running headers between documents in book

      Based on my last inquiry about running headers I suspect I know the answer but, is there a way to get running headers to carry across between files associated together in a book?

      This is a user manual situation.
      One of the examples is a version number which is set on the front page and carried in a text variable used as part of a running footer on every page.
      Works great until the second file. On its pages, there is no version number.
      It seems that along with the “first on page” and “last on page” variable options there needs to be “previous file” or some such option?
