      Hi there,

This is probably a very simple question but I can’t seem to get InDesign to snap to margin/columns.

I have snap to guides enabled, and it snaps objects to ruler guides fine. How can I get it to do the same to the margins/columns?

Snapping to margins and column guides is enabled by default, and if you have “Snap to Guides” turned on it should be working fine. If this occurring in only one document, you can probably clear the problem by saving it out as idml and creating a fresh indd from the saved idml file. If it’s a problem with all documents, it may be time to trash your InDesign preferences by holding down all your meta keys (Ctl, Alt and Shift on Windows; Ctl, Opt, Cmd, Shift on Mac) while InDesign is starting.

      Hello,

I have a somewhat similar issue, or at least “smart guides”-related. In some (not all) of my recent documents, some pages have lost their Smart Guides in the sense that I can pull a light blue guide from either ruler, but it disappears on the page when I “release”. This issue persists for several pages. All other margins, etc. are visible and functional. It’s just the guides.

I have gone through the various drop-down menus and the “Snap to Document Grid” process…and it’s not that I’m not in “Normal” view…to no avail. The weird thing, besides having this problem in the first place, is that other pages in my document have retained their guides.

      Thank you.

Marc–what are you setting for the percentage of when you will/will not see the guides?

        @Simon
: Sometimes the snap guides snapping to margins or columns may “feel” like they aren’t working, but actually are. At other times, it seems as if they will definitely “snap” at a different viewing size/percentage.

The Layout>Ruler Guides view threshold is 5% and the color is Light Blue. I have never altered this in Preferences.

I should also add that I can see the guides perfectly well when I drag them from the horizontal and vertical ruler at what must be the default setting (as I’ve never knowingly altered it) and on the affected pages, the guides disappear when dropped onto a live page.

Just *some* live pages. Others are unaffected, and it’s just one document, not one assembled as a book in sections. I would also add that the guides are visible in the applied master page for the affected pages, and that the same master is applied to nearby pages where guides *can* be added.

Hence my puzzlement. I’ve been at this since Pagemaker 4 and I’ve never had a problem I couldn’t crack. Thanks for your suggestions.

        I’m totally stumped, Marc. Sorry.

Hey, that makes two of us. If it were a universal thing (rather than just a few pages WITHIN a given master!), I would assume some combo of keys had turned some option on or off. But this isn’t the case. I can work around it by aligning objects via numerical positioning, but it’s annoying, to say the least.

        Thank you for your attempts!

        M.

Thanks for the replies everyone, I think it was a glitch.

After I went to the Master page and then cam back to the document page it was working again.
I have since had to delete InDesign and re-install it again, so let’s see if that clears the glitch too.

      Thanks again.
