      Hi there,

I am making a template document for people to use in my studio. The template contains a section start page* as a master, with a big number on it to show what the section is. Is there a way to make this number automatically change to reflect where it is in the document? For example if a user pulls in ten of these masters to the main body of the doc, they will be numbered 1-10, and will dynamically update if the user changes the sections later?

I’m sure there’s a way to do this.

*not an InDesign Section Start, just a designed page to show where the new sections of the document start. The user will have to designate these Section Starts in the doc if needed.

Maybe I’m misunderstanding, but are you talking about something like auto page numbering?

You can’t get there using a master page and what’s baked into InDesign.

A custom numbered list, however, started on a regular page, can be extended using “Duplicate Spread” from the context menu in the Pages panel. In the list options, be sure that you select “Continue numbering across stories” is checked. The frame you place on your “pseudo-master” can contain any kind of non-printing character, such as a thin space or hair space. All the list function needs is some kind of content, at which point it obediently provides a number.

As the document is being edited, if the order in which these created pages changes relative to one another, the numbers in the frames will change so that they remain consecutive in the document.

Thanks that works a treat, and you can put the box on the master – the only caveat being the user has to disengage that box from the master in order for the number to update but a note on the pasteboard should sort that out.

      Thanks a lot
