I’ve inherited an InDesign file from a client. Indent to Here does not line up correctly in their document, but works perfectly when copied and pasted in a new document. Any suggestions?

I am not sure about this suggestion but here it goes anyway…
The only reason I can think about is that your client used a previous version of ID and you are using a recent one (BTW, which version are you using?)
Check this hypothesis doing the following:
      1. Export the text from the original file that does not aligns
      2. Remove (delete) the text from this file; do not save the file.
      3. Import again the exported text into the not saved file and see what happens.
      4. Now load again the original file and repeat steps 1. and 2., but now save the empty file, before going to step 3. If the text did not align after step 3. in the first test, but does aligns after step 4. in the second test then my supposition is confirmed ;-)

Thanks Tom! Yes, they were using a previous version of InDesign.

Could there be Text Wrap on some object in the original document? That would “push” text out of alignment.

      Thanks Tom and ThompsonText.
Yes, they were using an earlier version of InDesign and I am using the latest version of CC.
I’ll try your suggestions Tom and see if that works.
I wish it was a text wrap! but this is occurring on an empty Master Page.
It has to be some setting connected with the file.

Another strange discovery. “Indent to Here” functions perfectly if created outside of a MasterPage.

      Hello Rachel,
(based on your comment above), another thing that occurred me, still a shot in the dark: delete the master page that came with the original file and recreate it using ID CC (your app). Apply the new master to the page(s) that show the problem you reported. See if this fixes the problem.
Let me know if my suggestion(s) worked :-)
      Regards and good luck
      Tom
