I am working with a client on a Data Merge project that requires both English and Russian versions with content pulled from pdfs into a .csv file. The English version works flawlessly. We are having a great deal of trouble getting the Cyrillic characters to import into the Russian version (yes we are using compatible fonts).

The client has been able to pull the information out of the pdfs and was finally able to get the Russian Cyrillic to read correctly in Excel and the .csv once they switched their Windows computer over to “location: Russia”. They then downloaded the trial version of InDesign CC (windows) and opened the template file, changed all fonts to match the Excel font. The data source was selected and checked to make sure all the content would flow correctly into the document.

Now the problem: the “Preview”/data merge shows only boxes and odd characters and does not display the Cyrillic characters.

I am hoping that you may have some helpful advice on how to correct this.

Thank you!!

There are a number of threads about CSV and UTF-8 over on Adobe’s ID forums, including <https://forums.adobe.com/message/4533952#4533952>.

Is the problem with the source rather than the process?
I don’t know much about the data merge process, but I do find that extracting text from PDFs can be hit-and-miss to say the least, with even things like French E acute being decomposed into an E and a separate acute.
