I’m confused about this new checkbox in the Export Image Settings for EPub, and I’m sure there are InDesign users here who can help explain it better. There’s a new checkbox in version 9.2 called “Use Original Image” and I’m not sure what that means. InDesign Help says…

The Use Original Image option is added to the Object Export Options dialog box and the EPUB Export Options dialog box. This new control requests that the export must use the placed image rather than the rasterized image.

…do they mean “linked” image rather than “rasterized” image? Placed images, such as TIF, JPG, and PNG are already rasterized.

Thank you for your help, InDesign users!

      Hi Glenn,

You are right that there is a new check box added in version 9.2 for Use Original Image. This option makes sure that the original image is used in exported EPUB instead of ID generated rasterised image but this is applicable only for image formats supported in EPUB like jpg, gif and png. By original image I mean the image that is placed in ID as a link. All other formats like eps, psd etc. will behave the same way even on selecting this option i.e. they will get rasterised.
Feel free to ask if there are any questions or clarifications required.

There seem to be situations where this creates problems in the EPUB export. Here’s my situation when I’m creating print and epub versions of books.

      1. There’s a folder with tifs of the images for the print version. I link to that folder and they export to PDF without a hitch.

      2. There’s another folder with similarly named jpgs of those same images. Many of them do NOT export to the EPUB if Use Original Image is checked. According to the description above, that’s because ID isn’t using the rasterised image but somehow cannot find the original. This seems to happen when the original is changed.

I’ve not been able to find any work around other that unchecking Use Original Image.

I realize this is probably doing precisely what it was intended to do, but for many users it no only looks like a bug, because User Original Image defaults to checked, they won’t be able to figure out what those images in the ID document are not appearing in the epub output.

        Hi,

I need more details on the actual workflow. It would be really nice if you could list down the steps that result in this problem.
Do the images in InDesign show up as missing or the links are up to date? From the description (I came to read the bug report that you had submitted to Adobe), it seems that only the images which have been modified do not export to EPUB. Is this correct?

        Regards,
        Pooja
