Using GREP to change many large spaces to smaller one?

I am laying out a textbook with many long words, which causes big gaps between words. Line composer and paragraph composer seem to cancel each other out. Is there a way to use GREP (which I am woefully ignorant in) to find larger than normal space between words to a third space (which seems to work very well in keeping lines balanced looking without gaps between letters)?

      Thank you, paulak

GREP will only find the actual character, not the space. If it is a single space that the composer has stretched out to a huge length I don’t think there’s a way of selecting it.

I would recommend putting some discretionary hyphens into just the long words so they break in appropriate places, but there are cleverer people than me on the forum, they may have better advice.
