i’ve got hundreds of tables coming up for a directory, but while i get how to do alternate row styles, haven’t managed to find a way of interrupting these styles with a sub head. For e.g., Table X has a rule that row 1 is shaded, row 2 not, row 3 shaded, row 4 not, etc. Great. I can import hundred of rows from Excel which can then conform to this style. But wait a minute! Every now and then i need to interrupt this lovely styling with a sub head. e.g. Say a table of 200 rows has 20 subheads, snf each of these subheads has its own (third) style. Plus all the cells are merged on that row. I don’t mind tracking the subheads and giving them a style which is different form the alternate rows, but if i do this, ID seems unable to start again from the row style ONE. Infuriating. Or maybe there’s a plug-in for this? Thank IDS.

I don’t think there is a particularly good answer to this, besides splitting the table up into smaller tables.

Another option might be to make one really tiny row before or after the subhead when you need one, just to act like a filler or something? Hm.

Thanks for your time, Mr B. If it gets a “hm” from the mighty Blatner, then I know I’m not just being dumb. Maybe there’s a plug-in? Preferably, though, I’d like this functionality to be built into ID. Do you think Adobe would accept the following in their suggestion box: “To be able to interupt the flow of alternate styles in tables with a third style, after which alternate styles resume from style no 1”. Or perhaps a more elegant way of phrasing it, which I can’t think of. Can you use pull some strings, please, David? Call favours? Buy drinks for somebody over there? Can I bribe somebody? It’s that serious! Cheers. Ian

That’s a cute idea about the ‘invisible’ rows, though. Thanks

You can always post ideas to Adobe here:

but don’t hold your breath on this one… better to find some good workarounds. :)

      Many thanks, David. Will do.
(and I guess your tiny ‘interrupting’ row idea can be helped by cell styles… although I don’t think you can specify cell height in styles? Not that I can see anyway…).
