InDesign6: Running Header variable on recto master page to show current chapter title.

The chapter titles are just spelled-out numbers, so chapter 21 displays as Chapter Twenty-One.

The recto running header is designed to be Title Case.

The chapter title text is in Title Case.

The “Chapter Title” paragraph style forces the title to full caps.

The Running Header variable take the formatted text and either . . .

      A. leaves the text alone, leaving the header in full caps, which is wrong, or . . .

      B. forces the case to Title, but doesn't capitalize the word after the hyphen, which is wrong

Basically, the InDesign notion of “title case” is too simplistic to work in this situation. I tried adding various kinds of spaces around the hyphen, but the title case algorithm doesn't see these as word breaks. Apparently only full-sized spaces are word-breaks.

I even inserted word spaces on either side of the hyphen, and then overrode the font size to 1 pt, but the Running Head algorithm (not surprisingly) ignores overrides. Same with kerning.

Does anyone know of a simple way to get around this?

      Thanks in advance,

      Allen
