Importing numbered text?

      I am trying to find if there is a way to import numbered text from Word & retain the numbering, but be able to edit the tabs and such. If needed, I can have the Word documents formatted differently. Right now they auto-format into numbered steps, but when I import into InDesign, the numbers either disappear, or if I manage to retain them, I can't un-format the auto tabs that Word inserts. Does anyone have a solution to this?
