I use InDesign CS5 to print a weekly newspaper on 11×17 bond, using a Kyocera FS8500DN colour printer. I used to export to pdf and print multiple pages, but since going with CS5 I use the booklet printing feature.

Somewhere along the line I have changed my print settings, and now my blacks seem to be separating and offsetting by a fraction of an inch, which means photos are losing their clarity, and graphics text appears duplicated.

I'm trying to print a graduation supplement to this week's edition, but the quality is horrendous.

What should my settings be for transparency, etc? I never used to have to check the resolution of my photos when I placed them, but everything comes in at 72 dpi and I have to go into photoshop and change them all. Then they still look crappy because of this shifting/separating issue.

Not sure why I haven't found this site before, because I've been using Pagemaker and now InDesign for over 15 years. It looks fabulous, though.

This sounds more like a printer driver problem, not InDesign. Try clicking Printer in the print dialog box to ensure that your driver settings are right. Weird!

Problem solved! I needed a colour calibration in the worst way. It's great now. If I'd been using an inkjet I would have clued in to that a lot sooner. Thanks. I'm looking forward to the great information and tips I'll find on this site.
