Alphabetic order: ignore or not ignore spaces

I've got an automatic Table of Contents with “Sort Entries in Alphabetic Order” selected. I'm not happy with the results, though, since titles that begin with “The” and “There” are not separated. The automatic alphabetic order is obviously ignoring spaces, thus I'm getting this:

      The B…
      The C…
      The L…
      There is…
      The S…
      The T…

Is there a way to make it put all titles that begin with “The” together? I guess there needs to be some value assigned to the space character – it must either be listed before “A” in the alphabet or after “Z”, right? Any advice? Thank you.
