OK, I have probably done something silly and will be enbarrassed when someone points out the bleeding obvious. But it has me beat.

I seem to have lost my smart guides in ID5.5. In Preferences/Guides and Pasteboard I have all four options checked under Smart Guide Options but, when I grab an object using the Selection tool (black arrow) and drag it around the page, I no longer get the coloured lines indicating when I have lined that object up with an edge or a centre of something else.

I LOVE that feature! Where has it gone? I want it back! Is there some other checkbox somewhere else that I have overlooked? Aaaaaargh!

Thanks for your reply, David, but I’m afraid that was not it.

I checked under the View menu and “Grids & Guides > Snap to Document Grid” was not turned on. The mystery continues.

Not sure if you've figured out your problem, Furry. I had a similar problem and tried David's answer but, like you, that didn't fix my particular situation. I found the answer here: https://forums.adobe.com/thread/526990

Once I replaced my preferences everything went fine. I used the first 'quick and easy' method, although it's not that easy. In the end I held down ctrl-alt-shift before (and during) the loading of InDesign as it was the only way I could get the dialog box to appear.

Hope this helps if you haven't already resolved the issue.

If anyone else has this problem, perhaps this will help. My smart guides also mysteriously disappeared recently, and after seeing this post, I was thinking I'd have to reset my preferences, as they were all enabled in my preferences just like Furry said. BUT in looking around the menus, I found that View>Grids & Guides>Smart Guides was not checked. I have no idea how this got unchecked, but I re-checked that option and viola! Problem solved, smart guides back.

How do these things happen? I don't recall ever having a reason to uncheck this option.

      Yah! That did it!

After eight months of having no smart guides, now they have returned! :-D

      Thank you. Reya1600!

I was reluctant to trash and reset my preferences because there are so many little personal tweeks in my preferences I am sure I would not be able to remember them all. Now I don’t have to.

      Thank you again.
