I have a 1000 page catalog in InDesign CS4 (needs to stay in version 4 because of a legacy plug-in). It's been printed, but we are doing updates for online version. I need to add 4 pages to the middle of an existing section. The sections are auto-numbered Section#-Page# (example 7-85). I have also used cross-references so I can't muck with existing page numbers (for example, I can't just add four pages after 7-85 and have it renumber because 7-86, 7-87, etc. already exists).

So I need it to be able to number the inserted pages 7-85a, 7-85b, etc. Is there a way to mix auto and manual page numbering? Will this mess up my cross-references? TIA for any advice.
