    Hi all, I am beyond frustrated with my paragraph styles. I've created a set of paragraph styles, and if I select the style before I type, the style works, but if I were to switch the paragraph style for the text after it's been typed, it “defaults” to another paragraph style (it's “defaulting” to my hyperlink style, which isn't the most attractive!). But when I go to the Paragraph Styles Panel and right click and edit the style, in the Paragraph Style Options window, the style is set up exactly how I want it!

    I created a document solely for character and paragraph styles with the intent of loading these styles into my various new documents, so initially I thought it was just when I loaded the styles into a new document, but when I went back to the original “template” that I made, I'm having the same issue. It's also not solely for this document, it seems to be all my inDesign files. I'm relatively new to InDesign, so I'm hoping that it's something that I inadvertantly clicked and it's a quick fix! Any ideas out there?! (I was recently upgraded to CS5 if that makes a difference.)

    Sounds like perhaps you have applied a character style to all your text by accident.

    Try deselecting everything — is a character style already selected in the character styles panel? If so, it's become the default. Oops. Click None.

      Explain that again. I am going nuts here. I don’t have anything selected on my indesign file. If the panel is open for style sheets I do see one highlighted. How do I get to none in the style sheet panel.

      Here’s what happens to me. I will suddenly have a style sheet that has worked perfectly no longer be what it says it is. Even if I select it with the option button. If I double click and look at the style sheet it has the font, size and everything it is suppose to have but that’s not what is on the page.

      I have my default type for this document made to be our normal body copy so when I made a new type box it’s ok at that point. But again I just went in to make that type one of the style sheets that looks perfectly fine when I open and look at it but that’s not what the type is.

      Doesn’t matter if I replace all the styles from a document that is ok, it still doesn’t work.
      Hope you can help me.

      When I said “deselect everything” I meant deselect all the text and objects on the page.

      And it’s important to differentiate between the Paragraph Styles panel and the Character Styles panel. Very different.

      If you have a character style on top of a paragraph style, it will override the paragraph style formatting.

    I’m having this exact problem. What do you mean by try to deselect everything. I do that but if I have already selected a paragraph style with a text box, it changes it back to default after the first paragraph style I choose. Until I delete that textbox and make a new one.

    This worked for me. I selected all of the text and sure enough there were Character Styles applied that would not let me override with a new Paragraph Style. Thank you David!

    Had the same problem- I selected all the text in a paragraph – then justified it by clicking justification button on menu bar -top of the page – the selected paragraph justified but all the others with the same style stayed unjustified (Aligned Left) – I then went to that style in paragraph style – I right clicked on the paragraph style and selected “Redefine Style” – Corrected Problem – All paragraphs with that style changed to justified
