I work for the Web division of a consumer print magazine. The print group has been tagging their layouts in K4. Our issues with the current system:

      • We have to transform the XML that K4 produces into something that our CMS understands, via an XSLT. This XSLT is cumbersome to maintain as new sections, etc., in the magazine are introduced.
      • The people actually doing the tagging are designers/producers on the print magazine. These designers have a thorough knowledge of their *styles*, but styles aren't always named semantically. Often they will tag things that are semantically incorrect, resulting in a botched mapping to the Web group's CMS.
      • Futher, there are actually four magazines that my company produces, and each magazine has its own set of styles (and set of people doing the tagging). This of course results in 4 different XSLTs to maintain.

      My questions:

      • What's the difference between exporting XML in K4 and exporting XML in InDesign?
      • Is there a way for *me* to personally do the tagging after the print group is done with a magazine layout, but for me to tag the file in a way that isn't beholden to styles. E.g., I would love to tag the text of the document in a strict, (X)HTML sense — calling lists lists, calling the most important headlines H1s, an so on. I would like to tag copy, not styles.

      Thanks!

You can link InDesign character and paragraph styles to XML tags so that applying them is pretty much a one click action — if you have a finished document and you want to export it. Working with XML in a document that is still being edited is a little more complicated in my experience. Once you have 'tagged' paragraphs and characters, you can export your tagged content as XML.

Most people on this forum do not have a high opinon of InDesign's XML tools, however if you want to explore further there is a fairly clear overview of InDesign XML capacity in A Designer’s Guide to Adobe InDesign and XML a book by Jame J. Maivald.
