However, the tool that is the closest to the Format Painter tool in Word is the Eyedropper tool in InDesign. The tool that looks like an Eyedropper! :-) You use it to pick up formatting (copy) and “drop it” (paste) onto other text.

It doesn't work exactly the same as the Format Painter tool, and in many ways is much more powerful (try double-clicking it to see its settings). Fool around with it, and read the online help instructions on it:

But in the end, you're going to find Paragraph Styles and Character styles much faster, especially being able to apply them automatically in the Word import dialog box, or via Find/Change, or with Quick Apply.
