How to return to the selection tool from editing text?

I've used InDesign for years on a Mac at work, but just installed CS4 on my home PC.

I'm getting quite frustrated with it because when I edit text, I can't find any way of returning to the selection tool. On a Mac I simply hit the Escape key and voila—but on a PC hitting Escape has no effect.

The only way I can find to get out of a text box is to go to the Window menu, bring up the Tools palette, then manually click on the Selection Tool. This is pretty cumbersome and inconvenient as it requires several clicks instead of one key press. (I also have to turn off the Tools palette afterwards as I hate leaving palettes on screen—especially the tools palette which is completely superfluous if you know all the shortcuts.)

Is there a better way of “exiting” a text box on the PC? Or could there be something wrong with my copy of InDesign? Is Escape supposed to work?

By the way, my Escape key works perfectly, in case you were wondering.

esc should work on both mac and windows. Perhaps it's been mapped to something else? What about Ctrl-click, then press V.

Thanks, David. Ctrl-click wiill get me out, then I can press v! :)

I checked the keyboard shortcuts and Escape hasn’t been mapped to anything else—it’s saying that Escape should work. Except it doesn’t. Must be something funny about my machine I guess.
