Second-level lists

I have another problem (you lot must be getting sick of me by now).

Is there any way of making a numbered paragraph move on to the next number without having to have a number at the previous level? So for example a list that goes:

      1(a)

      1(b)

      1(c)

      2(a)

      2(b)

      3(a)

      3(b)

      3(c)

I can tell a paragraph to 'restart numbering', but is there anything I can set to tell it to increment? 'Start at…' is no good because, aside from the nuisance of setting it manually for each number rather than putting it in a paragraph style, it only affects the number of the level it's on, not the number of the level above.

      Thanks!

      Here's the basic method:

but you want to do it with no 1… wow, it seems like it should be simple, but I can't think of how you would do it! Maybe you could put a “1.” on an invisible paragraph. But you need something to increment the first level.
