Is it possible to hide some text while using text variables? I am working with a law book in which throught the book there are no. of headings and i want to apply the same in recto pages using text variables. But before this heading some section nos. are appearing like 1.1…….., 1.2…….., 1.3………. Is there any trick to hide these nos. so that there are less chances to skip any running head. Right now I am applying these headings inserting sections through “Numbering and Sections option”. This is a long document around 1000 pages and this heading is appearing at every other page.

      Thanks in advance.

I assume these section numbers appear as text in the headings, and you want the running heads to inherit from the headings but without the numbers?

You could use GREP to apply a character style to everything in the heading except the numbers, and then base your text variable on that character style. The character style doesn't have to have any formatting, so it won't change the appearance of the text.

For example, you could use the GREP pattern: (?<=d.dt).+$
This will find any text after a number, a dot, a number and a tab, up until the end of the paragraph. You'll also need to put the paragraph style of your heading in the find format box.

Thanks a lot orielwen. It helped a lot.

2 more things i would like to ask you please.

      • Please suggest if some word in the same heading appearing in italic is it possible to inherit the same in running head?
      • How to control or make the running head fall in 2nd line if text of the heading is quite lenghty?

      Thanks a lot in advance.

      Hi Harry

Unfortunately neither of those are possible in InDesign as it stands, as InDesign treats text variables as a single character. I've heard a lot of people recommend the InTools Running Headers plugin to do what you're trying to do, but I've never used it myself.

      Hope this is helpful!
