Broken Link Paths in InDesign CS4

Ever since we’ve been using CS4 (about a year), we’ve had some problems with broken links.

For example: When archiving, we use InDesign’s package function. The only items we check on are Copy Linked Graphics and Update Graphic Links in Package. We package these items directly to a designated folder on our server. Once we close the InDesign file and open the copy that the package function just made, all of our links are broken. In other words, in the links panel, we get the red question marks.

We also have broken links if we re-name or move a folder from one location to another on our server. We know that’s not the best practice, but it is sometimes necessary.

We have also had broken InCopy links, sometimes in a completely different scenario. For example: A Copy Editor (using Mac OS 10.4.?) exports content to InCopy from InDesign. And Editor (using Windows XP) works on the content (using InCopy via the InDesign doc), checks it back in and hands it back to the copy editor (a very linear workflow). The copy editor opens the InDesign file and all the InCopy links (and image links, by the way) are red questions marks and she has to re-link everything. The folders have not moved or been re-named.

When we started looking into this problem, they found that the link paths seem to be more local and absolute (/Volumes/servername/folder/etc.) rather than relative (servername:folder:etc), as they seem in CS3. So far, this is the only thing we have come up with as to why our links are breaking (If this is even the reason).

I have been searching on the forums and have not seen anyone else with the same problem.
