I have an ID4 file that has a placed AI image set to 100%. The AI is changed and updated at regular monthly intervals, but is always the same dimensions in the same sized art board. Frequently, when I re-link to the new AI file, the scaling changes and the image jumps out of position. (From 100% to some strange percentage like 101.4397874%.) I have to make sure that it is set to 100% at which point, of course, the image jumps back into the correct position. Why doesn't the frame retain the previously placed image preferences? I'm sure it is Operator Error somewhere, but I can't seem to track it down. Any ideas?

I've been observing this behavior since CS2 when I first learned the program. I've never heard anyone offer a solution. Strangely, didn't seem to happen much in CS3. Just upgraded office to CS5 and it's back with a vengeance. Know about the “File Handling” preferences checkbox, but it doesn't seem to affect this issue. Just replaced a logo at 17% with a different color version and scaling jumped to 329%. urgghhh!!!!

I’m currently not sitting at my machine. But, does this behavior occur even if you open the linked image via InDesign (edit original, within the link panel)?

I found this on the In Design Help file. I think this is what was going on in my case.

When you relink to replace one graphic with a different source file, you can keep the image dimensions of the file that’s being replaced, or you can display the incoming file in its actual dimensions.

      1. Choose Edit > Preferences > File Handling (Windows) or InDesign > Preferences > File Handling (Mac OS).

      2. Choose Preserve Image Dimensions When Relinking if you want images to appear at the same size as the images they’re replacing. Deselect this option to have relinked images appear at their actual size.
