      How can I import a multipage word document into an InDesign document, either programatically or by using scripting?

      Ok, I figured it out on my own. I just had to set Autoflowing to true.

      var myDoc = myApp.Documents.Add();

      var myPage = (InDesignServer.Page)(myDoc.Pages.FirstItem());
      myPage.Place(wordFileInfo.FullName, new int[] { 0, 0 }, Autoflowing: true);

      Does anyone know how to keep the Word formatting? When I import it, InDesign doesn't import the formatting quite right. Are there any settings I could set that would help to preserve the formatting?

      Thanks,

      Troy

      WordRTFImportPreferences? It comes with a couple of settings that may apply: preserveLocalOverrides, removeFormatting; perhaps a bit more.

      Usually, I would set them to useful defaults in the UI, but ID Server has none of that …

      Thanks for the reply.

      None of the WordRTFImportPreferences settings seem to help. I wonder if there are margin or spacing differences in the two apps that are causing the problem?

      Hi,

      I usually have greater success importing multiple page Word documents into InDesign when I create Paragraph Styles using the same names in both Word and InDesign. The other thing that helps is I save my Word documents as Word 2003 instead of 2007. Don't know why but it works! :-)

      Thanks for the response.

      The word documents I want to open and print are documents from an outside source that would upload their document on a website and then print the document. The document would then be sent to them, or they would pick it up at the printers. So the conversion needs to be handled flawlessly, programatically and automatically. Converting from 2007 to 2003 is not an option, since some formatting could be lost.

      I have been coming to the conclusion that InDesign cannot convert Word documents and preserve the formatting, without first doing a lot of work mapping styles. Has anyone already done this work and mapped the styles? Because otherwise this seems like a huge task.

      Thoughts?

      Yes, I have a thought. If you want the finished documents to look exactly like a Word document, why bother to import them into InDesign?

      Because I am looking to create an website that uploads documents and reroutes them for printing. There are many document types to consider and someone told me that InDesign could not only handle adobe documents, but also word and excel documents. It seems this is not really the case. It seems InDesign only has partial support.

      Also, I can't render pages using any microsoft product because office automation does not work on a server level.
