I'm trying to print a CMYK file with a 5th colour from Indesign to PDF. I followed the specifications for the PDF exactly, but the printer has notified me that the 5th PMS colour is printing as CMYK. I'm not sure how to rectify this – is it as simple as changing the default colour output setting from “Composite CMYK” to “Composite Leave Unchanged”. Please note that the 5th colour is not being supplied as a seperate plate – the printer does the seperations themselves, but I need to get the PMS colour to remain unchanged.

Many thanks in advance for everyone's advice .

Why are you printing to PDF? Use File>Export

Then in the Output check the Ink Manager – and make sure the Spot colour is not being converted to CMYK

Also make sure your 5th colour is in fact a SPOT and not a CMYK colour

Edit the Swatch and make sure “Colour Type” is set to SPOT and not PROCESS.
